Missed by Other News Magazines
There were two significant stories placed side-by-side in this week’s World Magazine that most news outlets overlooked.
The first, and most significant, was the story of Amillia Sonja Taylor who went home healthy on February 23 after being born on October 24, 2006. Amillia was born prematurely after only 21 weeks and 6 days in the womb. She weighed less than a pound at birth. As the “age of viability” has been a central concern in the abortion debate, Amillia’s case should encourage states push for stricter limits on late-term abortions at the very least.
The other story was about Elliot Huck, a 14 year old, spelling bee contestant who advanced to the national spelling bee in 2005 and 2006. This year he will miss the contest, not because of his inability to spell, but because his state scheduled the qualifying round on a Sunday. Reportedly, Elliot chose on his own apart from parental pressure to forego the competition rather than to compete on a Sunday. He said, “If I make exceptions to following God’s rule, even if it were only once, there will be more exceptions that will follow.” He identifies his chief purpose in spelling or not spelling as “to glorify God.” We should pray that God would raise up many, many more Elliot Huck’s among us.
